A Culture of Possibility: Meet the First Recipients of the Kickstarter Culture Fund

Meet four Kickstarter Culture Fund recipients bringing creative ideas into the world, from immersive opera and experimental performance to community spaces and animation.

A Culture of Possibility: Meet the First Recipients of the Kickstarter Culture Fund

What does it take to bring a bold creative idea into the world? Sometimes, it starts with a little belief.

At Kickstarter, we believe that culture moves forward when creators have the freedom to experiment, challenge conventions, and build something entirely new. That's why we launched the Kickstarter Culture Fund, a $1 million initiative supporting independent creators across art, film, fashion, and music with financial contributions to help bring their projects to life.

From an immersive opera reclaiming a nearly forgotten history to a neighborhood gathering place designed to sustain a local arts community, Culture Fund recipients are reimagining what creative work can look like, who gets to participate, and how it can reach new audiences.

We're spotlighting four projects that show what's possible when ambitious ideas meet a community that believes in them.

The Invisible Woman: Bringing a forgotten history to life

What if an opera could transport you through time?

Inspired by the life of Francisca van Angola, a free Black woman who lived in 17th-century Amsterdam, The Invisible Woman follows two women separated by 400 years. When a young woman in the present day is drawn into a mythic journey through time, she must save Francisca's story from disappearing forever.

Creator Tamara Shogaolu is bringing this history to life through an ambitious combination of opera, virtual reality, fulldome experiences, animation, puppetry, and projection. Rather than a single production, the project envisions an expansive storyworld that audiences can enter in different ways.

At its heart is a question: Who gets to be remembered?

Shogaolu wants to celebrate Francisca's life through joy, beauty, music, and imagination, creating a work that reaches beyond traditional opera audiences.

After six years of development and experimentation, the project faced a critical funding setback. Kickstarter offered a different path forward: inviting audiences to participate directly in bringing the production to life.

The response was emphatic. The campaign raised $21,752 from 148 backers, exceeding its $15,000 goal.

Support from the Culture Fund helped advance the project's next stage, including a work-in-progress presentation at Dutch National Opera & Ballet, while building momentum toward Shogaolu's larger vision.

As she puts it, "The Kickstarter showed us that there is already an audience willing to help build that future with us."

The Listening Room: Giving Bay Area creativity a permanent home

For years, Bay Area Rising has brought independent artists and audiences together in borrowed spaces across San Francisco, from parks and museums to warehouses and vans.

After working with more than 100 artists and bringing thousands of people together, the collective began imagining something more permanent.

What if the community they created didn't have to disappear at the end of every event?

Enter The Listening Room, a neighborhood café, listening lounge, and creative gathering space designed to give Bay Area artists and audiences a place to call their own.

By day, visitors will be able to grab a coffee, listen to records, work, read, or simply spend time together. At night, the space will transform into a home for intimate performances, listening sessions, workshops, and other creative gatherings.

But the vision goes beyond opening another venue. The team hopes to create sustainable infrastructure for local artists, using the space's everyday operations to help compensate musicians, filmmakers, designers, engineers, and production staff fairly.

Having built Bay Area Rising through donated time, personal savings, and community support, the collective saw crowdfunding as a natural extension of its mission. The people who helped create the community could now help build its home.

With support from the Culture Fund and 189 backers, The Listening Room raised $31,168, surpassing its $30,000 goal.

The funding is helping the team navigate the substantial upfront costs of opening a physical space in San Francisco, from permitting and accessibility to construction and equipment.

The project is still in development, but its creators now have a growing community invested in seeing it succeed.

"The Listening Room isn't built yet, and reaching our campaign goal doesn't mean the work is finished," the team shares. "In many ways, it means we finally get to begin."

The POP Production: Breaking down the boundaries between art forms

What began as a college senior project has evolved into a much bigger creative ambition.

The POP Production started as a dance performance, but its creator, Maxime Werk, envisioned an experience that could bring together audiences and artists from across disciplines.

Inspired in part by mentor Corinne Jones and her immersive production Rollercoaster, Werk began exploring how dance, film, music, and visual art could interact in unexpected ways.

The result is an immersive production that combines dance, film, music, visual art, food, tarot, and more, with each element created specifically for the experience.

The goal is to introduce audiences to something they haven't encountered before while creating opportunities for connection across artistic disciplines.

Werk discovered Kickstarter after watching an acquaintance successfully crowdfund a short film. Seeing another independent creator reach a $10,000 goal demonstrated how community funding could make an ambitious artistic project possible.

For The POP, Kickstarter also offered a way to reach beyond its existing social media audience and introduce the production to people who might not otherwise discover it.

The Culture Fund contributed $1,000 toward the project's fundraising goal, helping the team move closer to bringing its next production to life. Recognition as a Kickstarter Project We Love has also helped introduce The POP to a wider audience.

Together, that financial support and visibility are helping Werk continue developing a creative experience that refuses to fit neatly into a single category.

Mabel & Switch: Opening doors for the next generation of creators

A creative career can begin in more ways than one.

That's the idea behind Mabel & Switch, an animated project that gives young people hands-on opportunities to explore the many disciplines involved in bringing a production to life.

Over the years, hundreds of young contributors have participated in everything from prop design, costume making, and scriptwriting to music composition, acting, storyboarding, and hair and makeup.

The project was founded to challenge the assumption that working in a creative industry requires a particular kind of artistic talent. Instead, it demonstrates how writing, building, woodworking, and countless other skills contribute to the creative process.

For some participants, the experience has become a stepping stone toward further creative study and independent projects. Others have continued contributing long after their student days.

Now, the team is crowdfunding to complete its latest episode, which has been in production for more than a year.

An important part of that goal is ensuring contributors are paid for their work rather than being asked to work for exposure.

Kickstarter gives the team an opportunity to bring its existing community together while introducing Mabel & Switch to new supporters across the country.

A contribution from the Culture Fund has helped accelerate the project's progress toward its fundraising goal, bringing the team closer to completing the episode and continuing its mission.

For the creators, the ambition is about more than finishing a film. It's about showing young people that a future in the arts can begin right where they are, surrounded by friends, collaborators, and a community that believes in their potential.

The future of culture is being shaped by the creators willing to imagine something new and the communities willing to turn belief into action. Explore more projects supported by the Kickstarter Culture Fund and discover an idea you can help bring to life.
