Add-ons Now Available to All Kickstarter Creators
A new feature that helps backers get exactly the rewards they want, driving more funding to projects.
Last fall, we started testing a highly-requested product feature aimed at streamlining and simplifying the experience for multiple-reward backings. We’re thrilled to announce that those tests went very well, and, starting today, all Kickstarter creators are able to offer add-ons to their backers.
Add-ons are optional rewards backers can choose to add to their pledges: accessories, game expansion packs, movie posters, copies of an earlier publication—any extra item that complements the primary reward without distracting from the core mission of the project.
Kickstarter creators have been unofficially offering add-ons for a long time. Up until last fall, that meant listing additional items on the project page and asking backers to do some quick math and manually increase their pledge amounts to account for the extra rewards they want, all to be sorted out at a later date. Obviously, this was a headache for backers and creators alike.
In 2020, we set out to solve that problem. We built an add-ons feature to make multiple-reward backings a seamless part of the Kickstarter experience, and tested it out with hundreds of creators. The results proved our hypothesis was correct: Add-ons promote higher average pledges and overall project funding while making the process of organizing backers’ rewards simpler for creators.
Any creator interested in offering add-ons to backers can set the feature up in the Rewards tab of the project editor, and get more details on creating and managing rewards in our Help Center.
An earlier version of this post, by Jeff Aldrich, announced the beta launch of this feature in September 2020.
