Creator Spotlights: Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere® RPG Becomes Kickstarter’s Most Funded Game Project
Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere® RPG

Brandon Sanderson, the superstar fantasy author and creator known for his expansive Cosmere® universe, has once again made Kickstarter history. Partnering with Brotherwise Games, Sanderson’s latest project, Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere® RPG, has now become the most-funded Games campaign in Kickstarter’s history raising $14,556,997 from 52,648 backers. The Cosmere® RPG offers fans an immersive experience, bringing the intricate worlds and characters of Sanderson’s novels to life in a way never before seen.

If you missed out on the action, Late Pledges are enabled on Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere® RPG so you still have a chance to back this project for a limited time.

This campaign is not just another record-breaking success for Sanderson’s team, whose previous Kickstarter project, Surprise! Four Secret Novels, remains the most funded campaign on the platform at $41 million. It marks a new milestone for gaming on Kickstarter.

"Our plan is for this to be a long-term endeavor, for this to be getting support for as long as I am writing new books in the Cosmere.” - Brandon Sanderson

The collaboration with Brotherwise Games has been a great success, as it combines Sanderson’s captivating storytelling with Brotherwise’s expertise in game design. The Cosmere® Roleplaying Game uses an original system created by an experienced team of RPG designers, including Lead Designer Andrew Fischer, Lead Writer Lydia Suen, and Consulting Designer Max Brooke. Some aspects of the Cosmere RPG will be familiar to tabletop gamers, such as gaining levels and rolling a d20 to resolve skill tests. However, the system also introduces fail-forward mechanics, narrative elements like a "plot die" rolled alongside the d20, skill-based magic, and character progression that uses flexible talent trees rather than rigid classes.

Keeping the game canonical is a major emphasis for the team. Each campaign setting, beginning with Stormlight in 2025 and continuing to Mistborn in 2026, will launch alongside a World Guide book that primarily consists of art and lore. Sanderson and author Dan Wells crafted the story for the Cosmere RPG’s first hardcover adventure, Stonewalkers™, and have used that story to give extra context to events in the next Stormlight novel, Wind and Truth.

“This project has blown away our expectations,” says the RRG’s Creative Director Johnny O’Neal. “With this level of funding, we’ll be able to keep working with world-class designers and artists to support this RPG for years to come.”

The project’s lowest pledge levels allow backers to choose the books they want. A reader who’s not interested in gameplay can select the Stormlight and Mistborn World Guides. Roleplaying game enthusiasts who just want to start playing can get everything they need with the Stormlight Handbook and Stormlight World Guide. Higher pledge levels unlock more accessories and adventure content across two years of releases.

Kickstarter has always been a gathering place for tabletop gaming enthusiasts, and this campaign proves the strength of backers new and returning to bring ambitious projects to life.

Congratulations again to Brotherwise Games & Brandon Sanderson.
