2024 Was a Big Year for Games on Kickstarter

Kickstarter remains the largest crowdfunding platform for Games, and 2024 proved why. 

Since 2009, more than 93,756 Games projects have launched on Kickstarter, with a total of $2.63B pledged from our unmatched 23M+ backer community—the largest backer network in crowdfunding.

That momentum continued in 2024, with $270M pledged to Games projects, reinforcing Kickstarter’s position as the leading crowdfunding platform for game creators. 

This past year also saw 70% of Games backings come from cross-category backers—supporters who also pledged to projects in Design & Technology, Comics, and Publishing—a unique advantage of Kickstarter’s diverse creative ecosystem. Because we support such a wide range of creative projects, game creators gain access to engaged backers with diverse interests, increasing the chances of discovery and support from new audiences.

Tabletop Games: Leading the Way

Tabletop Games—where Kickstarter remains the largest crowdfunding platform—continues to be the biggest subcategory in Games. In 2024, 83% of all Games pledges went to tabletop projects, which also saw growth across key success metrics:

• 6,646 tabletop games projects launched
• 5,314 successfully funded
• 80% success rate—the highest in our 15-year history
• $220M pledged to successful tabletop game campaigns

1. Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere® RPG by Brotherwise Games – Raised $15.1M+ from 55,106 backers, the highest-funded Games project of all time
2. Altered TCG  by Equinox – Raised $6.7M+ from 14,997 backers, the highest-funded trading card game in Kickstarter history
3. Trench Crusade by Factory Fortress INC – Raised $3.3M+ from 20,170 backers
4. Twisted Cryptids by Ramy Badie – Raised $3.1M+ from 33,210 backers
5. Terry Pratchett's Discworld RPG: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork by Modiphius Entertainment – Raised $3.0M+ from 17,223 backers
6. Root: The Homeland Expansion by Patrick Leder – Raised $2.4M+ from 27,549 backers
7. DC20 by The Dungeon Coach – Raised $2.2M+ from 20,684 backers
8. Terraria: The Board Game by Paper Fort Games – Raised $2M+ from 15,237 backers
9. Return To The 7th Citadel by Serious Poulp – Raised $1.7M+ from 15,137 backers
10. Thunder Road: Vendetta - Carnival of Chaos by Restoration Games – Raised $1.6M+ from 13,460 backers

Video Games: A Record Year

Beyond Tabletop, Video Games had its strongest year in nearly a decade, showing steady growth across key indicators.

• $26M pledged to successful video game campaigns—a 28% increase from 2023
• 441 successful video game campaigns—a 9% increase from 2023, marking the highest number of successful video games in our 15-year history

As independent game creators continue to turn to Kickstarter to fund their work, we remain committed to making the platform the best possible home for creators across mediums.

Looking Ahead

Kickstarter continues to be the go-to platform for game creators—big and small. In 2024, across all crowdfunding platforms, 78% of Games projects that raised $100,000 or more were launched on Kickstarter.

These major, six-figure campaigns don’t just succeed individually—they bring more active backers to Kickstarter, fueling discovery and support for a wider range of projects across the platform.

Beyond these strong numbers, we’ve introduced new features designed to help creators raise more funds and expand their reach. Late Pledges have enabled creators to continue raising funds even after their campaigns end, while Kickstarter Performance has helped them market their projects before, during, and after their campaigns—connecting them with even more backers.
