Kickstarter Films and Creators Take the Stage at SXSW 2026
At SXSW 2026, Kickstarter celebrates the films, filmmakers, and Kickstarter alumni shaping independent cinema.
Every year, SXSW brings together some of the most exciting voices in independent film, showcasing creators who are redefining how stories are made, funded, and shared with audiences. Known for championing bold premieres and emerging filmmakers, the festival has long been a home for artists building outside traditional studio systems, creators whose work is powered by community from the very beginning.
That spirit has always aligned closely with Kickstarter.
In 2026, Kickstarter returns to SXSW as the official sponsor of the Narrative Feature Competition, supporting a category dedicated to ambitious storytelling and world premieres from independent filmmakers pushing the medium forward. Across screenings, conversations, and filmmaker gatherings, our presence this year focuses on strengthening relationships with the creative community while celebrating the many Kickstarter-funded projects and alumni shaping the festival lineup.
Kickstarter at SXSW, at a glance
Throughout the festival, Kickstarter will connect with filmmakers through mentorship, panels, and community events designed to support creators at every stage of their journey.
March 15 - How Creators Are Rewriting the Indie Film Playbook Kickstarter’s Head of Film, Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu, joins Creator Camp CEO Max Reisinger and filmmaker Valspire Family for an Adweek session on how creator-led storytelling and community-driven distribution are reshaping independent cinema—and turning audiences into supporters long before opening night.
March 18 - Funding & Artist Support Mentor Session Festival attendees can sign up for one-on-one mentorship sessions with Taylor to discuss crowdfunding strategy, audience building, and sustainable paths to bringing independent films to life.
As sponsor of the Narrative Feature Competition, Kickstarter will also host an invite-only gathering for filmmakers in the category, creating space for directors to connect with peers, festival programmers, and Kickstarter’s film lead, Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu. Moments like these reflect a core part of Kickstarter’s role in independent film: supporting the relationships and creative networks that sustain the community on and off the platform.

Kickstarter-funded films premiering at SXSW
This year’s lineup once again highlights how crowdfunding continues to support daring independent storytelling. Kickstarter-funded projects appearing at SXSW 2026 include:
WAX (CIRE) — directed by Alexandre Forgues During exam season, a fourth-year microbiology student develops an ear infection that worsens alongside her academic stress until she believes something is alive inside her ear.
Downbeat — directed by Danny Madden A struggling drummer flees to Boston, busking with a bucket kit as chaos closes in.
Beyond the Duplex Planet — directed by Beth Harrington Beyond the Duplex Planet tells the story of artist David Greenberger, whose decade of conversations with nursing home residents became a singular artistic practice. It’s a portrait of creativity, aging, and the quiet power of listening.
These films represent the wide spectrum of work creators bring to Kickstarter: deeply personal documentaries, inventive narrative features, and projects developed through years of collaboration between filmmakers and their communities.

Kickstarter alumni across the festival
Beyond Kickstarter-backed projects, SXSW 2026 features a remarkable number of filmmakers who are part of the broader Kickstarter creative ecosystem. Many launched earlier work on Kickstarter before going on to premiere new films, collaborate across projects, or build lasting independent careers.
Notable alumni appearing at this year’s festival include:
- Boots Riley, whose early crowdfunding work helped pave the way for Sorry to Bother You
- Academy Award–nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt
- Independent filmmaker Josephine Decker
- Director and producer Brian Tetsuro Ivie
- Writer and comedian Chelsea Devantez
- Filmmaker Brea Grant
- Director Macon Blair
- Actor and filmmaker Katie Aselton
- Filmmaker Emily Robinson
Their continued presence at major festivals reflects a broader pattern we see every year: creators using crowdfunding not just to launch a single project, but to build sustainable, long-term creative careers.

Supporting the future of independent film
SXSW has long been a launchpad for filmmakers experimenting with new models of storytelling and distribution. As audiences discover films through communities, creators, and online platforms as much as traditional marketing, crowdfunding continues to play an increasingly central role in how independent cinema reaches the screen.
From premieres and mentorship sessions to conversations about the future of distribution, Kickstarter’s presence at SXSW 2026 reflects our ongoing commitment to helping filmmakers bring ambitious ideas to life and connect directly with the audiences who believe in their work.
We’ll see you at the movies!
