Short Films Start Here: Long Story Short 2026 Returns
Whether you’re an established filmmaker or bringing your first short to life, March is one of the most powerful times of year to launch on Kickstarter.
Long Story Short, our annual open call for short films, returns for 2026. Throughout the month, filmmakers from around the world launch projects across narrative, animation, and documentary, connecting with audiences who are actively looking to discover and support new work.
This isn’t just a celebration. It’s a moment when short films consistently perform better on the platform, with higher visibility and stronger engagement than at other times of the year.
Why Participate in Long Story Short?
Momentum matters. Projects launched during Long Story Short historically see higher success rates compared to other times of year, thanks to increased audience attention, editorial curation, and a shared cultural moment around short filmmaking.
By launching in March, you benefit from:
- More eyes on your project
Long Story Short campaigns are featured in a dedicated collection and promoted across Kickstarter’s homepage, newsletters, and social channels throughout the month. - Built-in discovery
Backers come to Kickstarter in March specifically to find and support short films. You’re meeting an audience already primed to say yes. - A creative community
Launch alongside filmmakers pushing the form forward, from first-time creators to Oscar-recognized storytellers.
Kickstarter has helped bring over 15,000 short films to life, including Academy Award–winning projects like Hair Love, Period. End of Sentence, and Inocente. Long Story Short continues that legacy by making space for bold, original voices every year.
